The ultimate New Zealand day drive … for the whole family!

Looking for the best day trip in New Zealand for the whole family? A daytrip to Nelson Lakes is not to be missed!

Probably the most well known spot here is Lake Rotoiti – it’s incredible!! There’s heaps to do here to and it’s literally a 1 minute drive from the wee town centre of St Arnaud. Down at the lake is plenty of parking space along the beautiful lake shore along with toilets, a playground, short walks, and heaps of space to run around. You can hire kayaks down here and even get about the lake by water taxi.

It’s a destination that’s perfect in all seasons and while summer is definately amazing you certainly can’t beat winter here either. You can try your skills on the wee ice skating pond just out of town with skates hireable in the village, or go skiing at the rainbow skifield just 20 odd km’s the other way.

An ice skating pond?!! That’s incredible!!

When you’re hungry there’s a wee store, fish n chips (if you time it right) and a fantastic restaurant which also has good accomodation (I’ve stayed here twice).

Need more awesome reasons to head out here?? How about trying your hand at gliding down at the local airfield? Or adding a side trip to Lake Rotoroa the quiet wee lake hidden down the road and around the corner?

Probably the most scenic spot to try gliding … ever!!

In fact the drive itself is pretty much one of the highlights and will take you approximately an hour from the main centres of both Blenheim and Nelson and it’s one of the top reasons for basing yourself in Nelson for an ultimate ‘Top of the South’ holiday!

A drive to take your breathe away!

I think it’s worth noting on closing that in fact the only downside of a daytrip out here is that one day will likely not be enough. You’ll be hooked and will find yourself staying overnight or most certainly returning for more!!!
